Music education is a natural medium for enriching and vitalizing all phases of the school program. The musical activities of singing, playing, listening, and rhythmic response are those in which each student can participate with some degree of success. Music can stimulate critical thinking skills as the students engage in higher levels of thought processes as they analyze, synthesize, compare, contrast, distinguish and differentiate within the course of classroom musical activity. Music can also be an effective tool in the learning and/or transfer of learning of specific information in all areas of the curriculum.
Scope and Sequence
Christian music education seeks to serve the Creator, His will and His Word. It is the goal of the music program at Central Christian Academy that the students will:
• recognize that music is a gift of God to be used to praise, worship, glorify and bear witness to God;
• develop an awareness of the fundamental components of music (tone, rhythm, harmony, form) through a variety of musical styles and composers; and
• develop listening and performing skills that will enable them to have more satisfying experiences with music.
Students in grades K through 8 have experience with the following elements of music at degrees of increasing complexity that are appropriate to each grade level:
Performance: pitch accuracy, breath management, tone quality, expression and repertoire
Melody: recognize melodic contour, identify phrases, sequences and patterns, perform part songs
Rhythm: recognize and perform note and rest values, perform rhythmic patterns in 4/4, ¾, 6/8 time signatures
Harmony: recognize chord types and functions
History & Listening: recognize instruments and timbre, identify composers and musical styles of the Classical, Baroque, Romantic and Modern Periods
Expression: identify and interpret musical symbols and indications
Biblical Integration: recognize that God created the human voice, God created us with musical responsiveness, recognize that music is used to worship, develop a repertoire of Scripture songs and hymns
Performances
Students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge of performance skills by participating in musical performances at Christmas (K-2) and in the Spring (3-5.)
