1st Grade

There is no other time quite like being a First Grader! A whole new world will be opened to your child through reading, writing, math, and learning God’s Word.

Bible

Students will discover that learning good values and God’s Word can be fun. Through the use of the Positive Action Bible curriculum, first graders will focus on the many gifts of love provided for us by God. Our students also learn to hide God’s Word in their hearts as they memorize Bible verses and sing them to catchy tunes each week. Prayer and sharing from God’s Word are intertwined throughout our day. We integrate our first grade theme “DTDR – Determine To Do Right!” as we seek to apply God’s principles in our every day lives. In addition to Bible class, we also have chapel each week.

Phonics and Spelling

Phonics and Spelling provides our students with a multi-sensory approach to decoding words and spelling. Our students use games and technology to stimulate their interest in learning how to read, spell, and write. Using this approach in combination with quality literature helps ensure success year after year to achieve reading goals.

Reading

In first grade we strive to instill a lifelong love for reading through the use of the Houghton Mifflin Reading curriculum and a wide variety of personal classroom literature collections. Each student is given opportunities to excel and progress at his or her reading level. We keep our students accountable by giving them a reading assignment folder and weekly homework assignments to go along with each reading theme throughout the school year. It is exciting to watch our students seek out new and different reading materials as their desire and their curiosity for reading increases.

Writing Mechanics

Students will learn a variety of basic writing and grammar to build a strong base for successful writing.

Mathematics

Students learn math concepts through guided explorations using hands-on materials, direct instruction, peer collaboration, games, and music. Our math curriculum, Math in Focus, emphasizes problem solving. We also use the IXL digital math program to meet the individual learning needs of students.

Science and Social Studies

We become discoverers and explorers when we see the wonders of the world God has given us. Within the language arts curriculum, students enjoy the cross-curricular study of science and social studies. Seeing an eagle up close, watching a hawk learn to fly, learning about hermit crabs, and visiting an apple orchard are just a few things that turn our first graders on to science in God’s world. When we study our Christian heritage, we learn an appreciation for our country, the people, our national symbols, and Godly foundations.

Enrichment Classes

We are blessed to have art, library, physical education, STEAM, and music classes scheduled throughout the week. These classes are taught by specialists in their field and in settings specifically designed for those activities.
