Third Grade

Third graders are TERRIFIC! Our third graders learn to grow in the Lord by daily cultivation of the Fruit of the Spirit.

Bible

We not only study God’s Word using the Positive Action Bible curriculum, but to apply it to all subject matter. We memorize verses each month that are intertwined with our study of the Fruit of the Spirit.

Reading

As students study classroom novels along with the Houghton Mifflin Reading textbook motivation for reading SOARS. A variety of genres and authors stimulates a love for literature and increases the desire for self-selected reading. Students reading skills blossom as they practice comprehension and analytical skills through a variety of activities: journal writings, scrapbooks, posters, character evaluations, and travel brochures.

Phonics and Spelling

Saxon Phonics and Spelling provides us with the tools to comprehend and apply phonics rules in all language art areas. Students are joyfully exuberant as they discover how to apply phonics rules to daily reading and writing. Students have the opportunity to expand their vocabulary on a weekly basis by attacking challenge words in addition to the regular spelling list.

Writing and Grammar

Grammar becomes simple and fun as we use a multi-sensory teaching method along with the McGraw-Hill Language Arts textbook. Third graders excel in writing skills as they are given the opportunity to express themselves through a variety of writing styles: poetry, letters, news reports, narratives, and fiction stories. We also write an animal research report and a biography book report.

Mathematics

Students burst with enthusiasm as math focus groups accommodate all learning styles. Math concepts and problem-solving strategies are part of our Harcourt School Publishers Mathematics textbook, manipulatives, and hands-on activities. The online IXL math program and interactive games are used to reinforce math computation and problem solving skills.

Science

A child’s natural curiosity is allowed to blossom as we explore God’s creation. All science is taught from a Christian viewpoint. We utilize the Purposeful Design science text book published by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) to investigate and explore plants, animals, ecosystems, matter, motion and force, electricity, magnets, rocks and soils, earth’s surface, the solar system, stars and constellations, and the human musculoskeletal system. Field trip opportunities, as well as research projects, enrich our scientific units of study.

Social Studies

History comes alive through interactive field trips, character portrayals, and a celebration of our state’s history. Our American Heritage textbook published by Abeka gives the students an opportunity to explore the lives of famous Americans and to identify Christian character qualities exhibited in their lives. Each student enjoys researching and dramatizing the life of a self-selected historical figure, and eagerly presents this information during our special Biography Day.
